What is SEO? How to do SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a strategy for improving your site’s
rankings in search engine results.
The top 5 search engines are,
· Google.
· Bing.
· Baidu.
· Yahoo!
· Yandex.
What happens when a search is performed?
In addition to the search query entered by a user in search engine, search
engines use other relevant data to return results, including:
· Location – Some search
queries are location-dependent e.g. ‘cafes near me’ or ‘movie times’.
· Language detected – Search
engines will return results in the language of the user, if it can be detected.
· Previous search history –
Search engines will return different results for a query dependent on what user
has previously searched for.
· Device – A different set of
results may be returned based on the device from which the query was made.
Why SEO needed for a website?
1. It helps your target audience find your site
It involves identifying which keywords and phrases your target audience
uses when looking for products or services like yours, then working towards
ranking well for those searches.
For example in a traditional
campaign, you determine a location you want your brand to appear, whether
that’s on a particular TV channel or radio station, or in the pages of a
magazine or newspaper.
· Then, you pay the company
that owns that media for placement. You might pay for your ad to run for a
certain length of time, or within a certain number of issues. As soon as that
period is up, your ad stops appearing — and stops generating results for your
business.
2. It boosts your credibility and authority
If you want your business to be
part of a user’s online research process, it needs to show up in search
results for keywords related to the products or services you offer.
In fact, 62% of consumers turn to search engines first when they want to
learn more about a new business, product, or service — and 41% use them when
they’re ready to buy.
So knowledge of content marketing required to write articles about product
options.
Following shows how actually content marketing works,
First, a user finds your site by searching for product
Then, they read that resource. If they like it, they might share it with
their friends and subscribe to your email list.
Then, when they’re finally ready to make a purchase or speak with a sales
representative, they’ll know exactly which company to turn to and they feel
comfortable to buy.
3. SEO can help you stay ahead of your competitors.
4. It’s easy to measure
Use tools like Google Analytics to monitor your traffic, referral sources,
conversions, and any other metric that matters to your business.
5. It improves user experience.
Technical factors like mobile-friendliness, usability, and site speed play
a much bigger role in rankings than ever before.
In April 2015, google took a
step to boost mobile-friendly
pages in search results.
There’s quick way to see whether
your website is indexed. Just use this search operator in Google:
To see the approximate number
of indexed pages, just goto google.com and then enter,
site:yourdomain.xy
To see if a specific page is
indexed:
site:yourdomain.xy/page
What to do to get website listed on top in search engine?
Build a perfect site structure
using sitemap.
For a blogger , google
automatically provide sitemap.xml .
To check this just enter , www.yoursite.blogspot.com/sitemap.xml
in the browser.
Now goto google search console
and select the blog and then select sitemap.
To improve web site page ranking,
1.Build a site structure using sitemaps
There are two types of links:
1.Structural links
e.g. navigation in menu
and footer, breadcrumbs, call-to-actions
2.Contextual links
e.g. in-text links,
read more links
2.Link to quality external sources
Outgoing links may be used as a
ranking signal by Google.
Legit websites tend to link to
other legit websites, but never to low-quality, spammy websites.
3.Improve page loading speed
What happens if you open a page and wait more than, let’s say 3 seconds?
You probably hit the back button and look for another result.
Google collects these signals and takes them into consideration in their
algorithm.
To test the page speed, you can use PageSpeed Insights from Google here.
PageSpeed Insights will only show you results for one page at a time.
Therefore, the results apply only to this page. Choose multiple page types
(homepage, blog post, product page) and test them all.
To implement all the technical stuff perfectly, you may need a developer
(unless you know something about HTML/CSS minifying or DOM elements).
4.Choose a proper web hosting
Things you should take into consideration:
-Speed
-Uptime
-Server location
5.Optimize the images
This is one of the most important things when it comes to page speed.
Image files that are too big take ages to load (that can mean a few seconds
in the SEO world). Therefore, you should optimize the image sizes and find the
ideal balance between size and quality.
Also, don’t forget to compress the image files. You can try the tool
TinyPNG
Big image files are the most common issue causing slow page loading.
Try to keep the image file size under 200kB and use lazy loading if there
are too many images on the page.
6.Enable browser caching
Every time someone visits your website, all of the elements are loaded.
These elements are stored in a temporary storage in their browser called cache.
Caching ensures that your website will be much faster for returning
visitors.
7.Make your website mobile-friendly
Google’s favors mobile-optimized
sites.
There are several options for mobile: a separate mobile site or responsive
design. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but the best solution for
SEO and analytics nowadays is the responsive version.
8.Secure your website
Is your site secure and running on HTTPS?
In other words, having a secured website can help you rank better,
especially if your page is compared to another page with similar quality but
without SSL certificate.
9.Create short and simple URLs
10.Research your keywords
It is important for
-finding new topic ideas
-finding phrases that are
popular, relevant and easy to rank
-understand what people are
interested in
